The Church rolled out creative ideas on how to observe Ash Wednesday for the people to keep safe and avoid spreading the virus. However, the traditional practice of Ash Wednesday was modified this year by the Catholic Church because of the Novel Coronavirus pandemic befalling the entire world. The priest says the formula, “Repent, and Believe in the Gospel”, or “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” The traditional practice includes the priest applying the ashes, which are made from burnt blessed palms and symbolize the dust from which God made us, with his bare hand to a person’s forehead. Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. It is a day of repentance and profession of faith. It is one of the most significant holy days in the liturgical calendar. Ash Wednesday signifies Catholics’ embarking on their Lenten journey.
